Hey Mister DJ: “Shining Star”

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Happy Thanksgiving!

Earth Wind & Fire. Wow … what can be said which hasn’t already been said? Nothing really, so I’m not even going to try! Instead, this very special Thanksgiving “Hey Mister DJ” goes out to everyone on the Davis Virtual Assistants team, including our VA Apprentices, our kick ass Associates and the Virtual Consultants who comprise the Joint Venture team.

Let’s start off with the following:

You’re a shining star
No matter who you are
Shining bright to see
What you can truly be

Powerful stuff, my friends, powerful stuff! I believe we’re put here for a purpose, and I believe everyone has within them the power to be a shining star in their life. You are a shining star, whether you realize it or not. The folks you encounter during the day appreciate and need you. When you hold open the door for the mom with the three under-the-age-of-5 tax deductions, your small deed is appreciated. The card you sent to the friend you haven’t seen in years? Well, you just made their day! A “shining star” doesn’t necessarily have their name in lights, nor in the local newspaper …

My team members make my eyes sparkle, every day! I love, honor and respect all of you, and I’m grateful for having you in my life. Where would I be without this team of amazing Virtual Consultants? I don’t want to ponder that question! As we approach my all-time favorite American holiday, I raise a glass of ice cold orange juice in honor of you. I’m thankful I know you, and that I can call you my friends. My life is pretty damn good, and the folks on my team make it that much more so. ;-)

Hey Mister DJ: I can’t take it anymore! I’m gonna strap on my platform shoes and let the rock ‘n roll hair fly as you play me:

Shining Star (Live)

WWLD: Where do I start?

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Good morning, campers!

Today’s edition of “What Would Lori Do” is dedicated to those business owners who are contemplating outsourcing, but have no clue how to begin the process.

What Would Lori Do if I were in your shoes and new to the warm and soothing waters of the Virtual Assistance industry? Read on for more …

  1. Before you think about your budget or what you can outsource, you’ve got to take a good long look in the mirror and do a bit of self-analysis. Remember, when you outsource to a professional virtual assistant, chances are high you will never meet your VA. Can you deal with the fact you’ll probably never meet your VA partner face-to-face? What concerns, if any, do you have in regards to your own level of trust about your team members? Also, are you so Type A and so control-freakish that the thought of outsourcing sends you screaming for the hills, minus The Sound of Music background?

There are some business owners who aren’t a good fit for my industry, and I’ve got no problems with that fact of life. Some biz owners are best served, and their sanity is maintained, when their assistant visits them at their office. Are you one of those people, or do you have a relatively high comfort level knowing you’ll never meet me?

  2. Budgeting is another step to take in your outsourcing plans. Remember, the beauty of outsourcing is that you’re not going to make the same monetary investment you would with a full-time employee. In addition, you don’t pay “benefits” of any kind, such as health insurance, over-time, workers’ comp or vacation or sick time.

If you’re new to my world, I want you to start with outsourcing 5 hours per month and do so for the first 1-3 months. I’ve yet to meet a business owner whose budget couldn’t handle the 5 hour threshold. As you and your VA work out the mechanics of your business partnership and as you begin to increase sales and acquire new clients, you’ll have more money for your budget and in turn will be in a position to outsource even more work to your awesome Virtual Assistant.

  3. Finally, you’ve got to think about what you can outsource! (This may be the toughest thing of all.) Here are some pointers:

    1. Download a copy of DavisVA.com’s “Going Virtual Checklist” to help you get moving in the right direction.

    2. Make a list of those projects and tasks which you despise doing.

    3. Make a list of those projects and tasks which are consistently falling through the cracks.

    4. Make a list of those projects and tasks which are best left to an assistant.

One of the goals of outsourcing is to get those things off your plate which are preventing you from keeping your business IN business. If you’re handling your own appointment setting and calendar management, shopping cart and website updates, article marketing and blog administration, you’re a prime candidate to work with a virtual assistant.

What Would Lori Do is to start with the basics and to set a solid and firm foundation for my outsourcing plans. There really is no other way! Set the foundation and put your plans in motion … today.

Call me at 866.611.LORI or talk to me about your outsourcing plans. Outsourcing isn’t scary, nor is it difficult. Let’s connect, and I’ll show you the way!

Monday’s DON’T have to be like this …

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Good morning, campers! Get your fine self out of bed, and let’s get rolling on the day. Remember to have a filling breakfast and take the stairs instead of the elevator!

So, here we are, just you and me. I know you may be feeling like this right now:

humorous pictures

No, no, not hungover (well, that might factor into your personal equation!), but you’re feeling like Monday’s suck. Big time. Another day as The Big Kahuna Entrepreneur and another day without an administrative support team. No wonder you’re hanging your head in shame! Monday’s, and all of the other days of the week, don’t have to suck, if you do something positive and make a change.

Your competition is getting the best of you, and you know it. They’re probably sleeping in an extra hour or two because they know their team is making them look ohhhhh so good to their clients. Instead of dreaming about the insanity of having to return 10 phone calls, update the blog, add 50 contacts to the CRM, schedule 3 appointments and add the 4 new info products to their shopping cart, your competition is in action and spending their time planning to keep their business in business. Your competition has “gone virtual”, and they’re not feeling like the chap above.

Outsourcing to a qualified and professional virtual assistant is one step in the right direction. For the majority of you, partnering with a VA is a good fit and will give you the time and energy (and sanity) to help you keep your eye on the prize regarding your business. Your family, colleagues and clients will thank you for doing so!

It’s Monday, November 24, 2008, and if you’re ready to go virtual, I want to talk with you. Pick up the phone and call me at 866.611.LORI, or tell me your business pain and how the Davis Virtual Assistants team can help you make the Monday Morning Blahs a thing of the past.

Thrifty Thursday: A CRM’ing we will go (final reminder)

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Good morning, campers!

A final reminder regarding this very special Thrifty Thursday, which was originally posted in October 2008. Nearly 50 business owners have taken advantage of this offer, and I want you to be next!

Thrifty Thursday** for November 20, 2008 has your name written all over it if you’re venturing into the world of CRM, or Client Relationship Management. If you’ve been using spreadsheets or a word-processed document for this task, it’s time to play a bigger game. Lucky you, the good, sassy and ohhh so geeky folks at Davis Virtual Assistants have got your back!

It comes down to this: Clients beget money. Clients beget referrals. Clients get pissed off when you don’t “touch” them on a consistent basis. With me so far? Excellent. Read on for more …

Today (not next week or next month) you are going to stop using that humongous, multi-tabbed, multi-colored spreadsheet to track your clients. That’s weak and low-man-on-the-totem-pole action. To join the big Killer Sharks in the deep end of the business pool, you’ve got to step up your game and use the tools they’re using. All serious business owners are CRM’ing, and it’s time for you to jump on the same bandwagon.

Thrifty Thursday** for 11/20/08 is a whopping 20% off your 1st invoice when you work with the DavisVA.com team to launch and manage your CRM project! I’ve got my well-manicured hands in all types of systems, including salesforce.com, Infusion, SugarCRM, Trackvia, Highrise and Autotask, and chances are I already know the system you’re about to use. Even if I don’t, remember the learning curve is on me.

This very special Thrifty Thursday is extended through December 31, 2008, which means you have until the very last day of 2008 to get in touch with me and claim this discount. Do I want you to wait that long? Hell to the no, Shark! The longer you wait, the more your competition will get the best of you. If you’re not ready right now to get started on this project this calendar year, you’ll at least have until the end of the year to claim the discount, and then we’ll get started on this project during Q1 of 2009.

Thrifty Thursday** 11/20/08 phone lines close at 12:00 PM U.S. Eastern on Wednesday, December 31, 2008. Contact this Virtual Assistant, show me your business fins, and show me you’re ready to make the leap from that confining Guppy bowl and cannonball with joy into the business shark tank!

** This Thrifty Thursday discount may not be combined with any other offers or discounts offered by Davis Virtual Assistants. This discount may be claimed only by new Davis Virtual Assistants (DavisVA.com) clients.

Don’t make me smack you in public

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

A superb good morning to all my Business Sharks! For all my Guppies, I want a 1,000 word essay on my virtual desk by 5:00 PM U.S. Eastern time today, telling me how you plan to play a bigger game and compete with all the Sharky competition in your world.

If I had a dime for every business owner who’s come through my pipeline telling me they were pressured into a 20-hour-a-month retainer by their new Virtual Assistant, I could have retired way back in 2001. Like the title of this post states, Don’t make me smack you in public and don’t you dare sign a retainer during your first month of outsourcing. Furthermore, don’t go all retainer on me until at least the third month of your partnership with your new Virtual Assistant. Why? Several reasons:

  • While outsourcing is a very good and sexy thing, you can’t be sure you’re going to need 20-hours a month on Day 1 of your partnership with your VA. Indeed, you’re not going to turn over everything to your VA on Day 1. Instead, you’re going to start with a few small projects to get a feel for the relationship, you’re going to work out the mechanics of your new partnership, and you’re going to set in motion the plans for the months and years to come with your Virtual Assistant.

  • Remember, retainer hours do not rollover to the next month. If you purchased 20-hours this month and only spent 6, well, you do the math …

  • You’ve got to ensure this VA is the best fit for you and your business model. Don’t go the retainer route unless and until you’re absolutely convinced of this “fit.”

On the flip side, here are some ways to handle a retainer:

  • Take the average number of hours for the first 3 months of outsourcing and then determine if a 10-, 15- or 20-hour monthly retainer is truly in your best interests.

  • Ask the VA, prior to partnering with her, if she will extend a retainer(s) during your “selling season.” If you know for a fact that you’re going to need x-number of hours each month for June, July and August, ask the VA if she’ll accommodate your retainer needs only during those months.

Do not allow yourself to be pressured or pushed around by VAs who have only their best interests at heart. Remember, this is your business and it’s your pocketbook. Act like the bad ass Big Kahuna you are, and keep your eye on the prize.

Want more helpful tips on interviewing and partnering with a Virtual Assistant? I’m releasing a new e-book called “Walk the Walk and Talk the Talk: The Virtual Assistant Interview Questions,” and you can be the first on your block to be notified when the e-book hits the streets! Lori Recommends: “10 Characteristics of Successful Salespeople”

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Good morning, Sharks!

Please allow me to direct your attention to a superb article written by Kelley Robertson, of the The Robertson Training Group, entitled, 10 Characteristics of Successful Salespeople. I really love this article! Even though the copyright is dated 2005, Kelley’s words continue to ring loud and clear to present day business.

Most appreciated is bullet point #1, “They are persistent.” Kelley goes on to tell us, “The most successful people in any industry have learned to face the obstacles that get in their way. They look for new solutions. They are tenacious. They refuse to give up.”

Let’s go over that last bit once more: They refuse to give up. Do you refuse to give up, even now during this tough and scary economic environment? I’ll tell you the same thing now I tell everyone who crosses my path: I refuse to go back to Corporate America. Absolutely refuse. One of the ways I’m continuing to keep this promise to myself, nearly 9 years into my own business, is by remembering that I am a superb salesperson. I love the game of it all, and I see parts of myself and my selling style in each of the 10 bullet points discussed in Kelley’s article.

Kelley’s bullet point #5 tells us, “Successful sales people are passionate.” It’s the passion and the love we have for our companies which continue to drive us. No matter the widgets you’re selling, or the services you’re offering, you started your business because you’re passionate about something. Don’t allow anyone nor anything to stand in your way, and keep on doing what you do.

I’m going to add bullet point #11 with “Salespeople have a support team.” When you’re in business, you can’t be successful at it all by your lonesome. It’s not physically and mentally possible to do so! Business owners, who are at their very core salespeople, must have a team in place to help them accomplish all of their goals. The widgets and the services need to be marketed, the bookkeeper needs to keep track of sales, the web team updates the site and makes it sexy, and your administrative team is in the background helping you make sense of it all and continuing to keep you on track. Salespeople continue to show passion and enthusiasm for the business, and their team feels that and wants to be part of it. Team-building is necessary to your success.

Riddle Me This: How does your team look on this day, Tuesday, November 18, 2008? Do you have qualified administrative support, or are you still functioning as the Chief Paper Pusher? If the latter, we need to talk today. Call me at 866.611.LORI, or contact this Virtual Assistant, and let’s chat. Tell me all about the widgets and services you offer, and I’ll show you how outsourcing can add value to your business.

The orgasmic release of letting go

Monday, November 17th, 2008

A superb good morning to all my Killer Sharks, and a virtual shout out to all my Guppies who’ve finally pulled the trigger and decided to outsource! You’re stepping into Shark Land, and I applaud your decision to work with a qualified and professional Virtual Assistant company.

Don’t get your boxers in a bunch because of the title of this post. This is, and will forever remain, a PG blog. The “big O” I’m referencing today is all about how you’ll feel once you let go of the madness of handling your back office all by your lonesome.

I know how you’re feeling, as you open up your office to get your Monday started. You’re not feeling well, you’re stressed and you’re wondering how in the world are you going to get everything done today. As you focus on the administrative stuff, your mental energy has no room to focus on keeping your business in business. You’re not giving your clients enough face and phone time, you’re not planning you’re marketing activities, and you don’t have an administrative team in place. Have I struck a chord? Good. Read on …

You’ll get “the big O” feeling again about your business once you step into my world! The warm and soothing waters of Virtual Assistance are what you need to help restore your sanity, help you play a bigger game (and continue to snuff out the competition), and once again feel sexy about your business model.

It’s Monday, November 17, 2008. I’ve got faith in you, and I want to help you achieve your biggest, baddest and wildest dreams. The first step, my special business owners, is to reach out, connect with me and tell me how I may help you achieve your version of the big o.

Hey Mister DJ: “I Will Survive”

Friday, November 14th, 2008

The guilty pleasure and sheer power that is I Will Survive cannot be underestimated! Whether you’ve been dumped, kicked to the curb, fired, harassed by the manager who really shouldn’t be in that position, ignored by your favorite cat or [fill in the blank with your own pity party of 1 story], this song is here to make it all better. The girl up at bat at karaoke night blasting away at this song as her former lover walks through the doorway? Yup, we’ve all witnessed that insanity. The dudette or dude on the highway with the top popped and the dog in the backseat, singing offkey at the full capacity of their lungs? Been there, done that and bought the t-shirt! The old skool crowd (uh, that would be me) at the skating rink who squeal with delight at the piano intro? Awwww yeah, let’s give it up to those of us over 40!

You should change that stupid lock, and you should make them leave their key. Otherwise, they will be back to bother you. ‘Nuff said.

You can do it, and Miss Gloria and I have got your back.

Hey Mister DJ, me and the girlies are going roller skating tonight in Amsterdam. Get us in the mood for the rink and play me:

Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive

Cool Marketing: Go Meat!

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

A fine and gorgeous ‘Dacks good afternoon to all my Killer Sharks who are making it happen today! Plus a special tip of the hat to my Guppies who’ve jumped cannonball’d with joy into the warm waters of the Virtual Assistance industry. Carry on.

Let me put this out there, right now: I’m an easy audience. The most inconsequential things make me giggle out loud scores of times each day. No shame in my game! In this light, I want to touch upon one of my favorite series of commercials, that being the “Go Meat!” campaign from Hillshire Farm. (I’m also a huge fan of the boy band from FreeCreditReport.com and the AIG giggling babies.) I love each and every spot in the series, and my favorite has got to be the one in the video below. Why? Well, in my Veteran’s mind, the guy is calling cadence, which takes me back to my BASIC and AIT training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, which reminds me of the cool DI’s who understood that to keep us moving and motivated on 30-mile marches, you had damn well better give me some cadence I can wrap my head around.

My favorite DI was a super-tall drink of water who possessed one of the deepest voices I’ve ever heard. His gorgeous, funny, snarky and sometimes over the top delivery of cadence always made my day, even as we were grinding it out and this (sometimes evil!) DI was putting us through our paces. He took us to hell and back during the inferno-hot summer of 1984 in South Carolina, and I’m so glad he was part of my training experience. Remember those scenes in An Officer and a Gentlemen and Full Metal Jacket where those DI’s were bellowing “male” versions of cadence? Well, my DI in 1984 did the same thing for us Army babes … female style.

Now, I don’t know if the marketers behind these spots realize just how effective their efforts have been in planting “Hillshire Farm” in my brain. And, I don’t know if they realize they’re making me think of my Army days, more than 20 years ago. All I know is I dig these commercials and yes, you’ll find Hillshire Farm food stuffs in my freezer.

What say you? What are some of your favorite commercial spots, and why?

Heroes

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

To all my fellow Veterans, to all of the first responders, to the firefighters who went into the burning house up the block last Christmas Eve to try and save D., to all the EMS crews, to the firefighters who went into my home in San Francisco when it was on fire, to the firefighters in Boonville, Indiana, when I was the tiniest of tax deductions, for saving my entire family from that frightening fire that destroyed our business and our home, to the medical staff who took care of dad before he passed away, to the medical staff who take care of Joe when he was very ill, to the Patriot Guard Riders, to everyone who serves, protects and defends … this one is for you.

Thank You.
