You’re in business, so dress the part
Wednesday, January 25th, 2006Good morning, campers! It’s a gorgeous morning here in upstate New York, with the Adirondacks in the background. How’s your morning, so far?So, I’m mentoring a few folks who want to become Virtual Assistants. (Imagine that … ME, a mentor.) One of the issues presented during our mentoring sessions concerns the home office dress code. Several of the folks I’ve mentored in the past (you know who you are!) told me they would stay in their pajamas until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Are you kidding me? My advice? You should have a normal morning routine and prepare and dress for work, even if your work location is only a 45-second walk from your bedroom.
My routine? Easy. I’m usually up (not alive, mind you!) by 6:30a. I do my morning routine of feeding the cats, checking ALL the pipes in the basement (did anything freeze or burst overnight?), checking the oil tank, upstairs to the kitchen to grab a tall glass of O.J., and then upstairs to power on Lori’s Home Office Empire. I always check e-mail first: Anything crazy or emergency come in overnight? Anything I need to respond to right now? Check v-mail, again checking for anything which I need to respond to immediately. Next, it’s breakfast time … this Director of the Future MUST have breakfast, otherwise, I’m an evil wench for the remainder of the day. After breakfast, it’s shower time and then a 2 - 3 hour wait for the rock ‘n roll hair to fully dry. After the shower, I dress in business casual attire. This entrepreneur does NOT hang around the house all day in pajamas and more important, neither should you. Finally, I’m generally at the keyboard by 8:00a, ready to make money and expand the DavisVA Empire.
Look, you don’t have to dress in your Chanel suit and Jimmy Choo’s every morning (unless of course you want to do that!). You should, however, project a business-like demeanor. Doing so sets the tone for the remainder of your day and will make you feel more powerful and more successful.
