You’re in business, so dress the part

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

Good morning, campers! It’s a gorgeous morning here in upstate New York, with the Adirondacks in the background. How’s your morning, so far?So, I’m mentoring a few folks who want to become Virtual Assistants. (Imagine that … ME, a mentor.) One of the issues presented during our mentoring sessions concerns the home office dress code. Several of the folks I’ve mentored in the past (you know who you are!) told me they would stay in their pajamas until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Are you kidding me? My advice? You should have a normal morning routine and prepare and dress for work, even if your work location is only a 45-second walk from your bedroom.

My routine? Easy. I’m usually up (not alive, mind you!) by 6:30a. I do my morning routine of feeding the cats, checking ALL the pipes in the basement (did anything freeze or burst overnight?), checking the oil tank, upstairs to the kitchen to grab a tall glass of O.J., and then upstairs to power on Lori’s Home Office Empire. I always check e-mail first: Anything crazy or emergency come in overnight? Anything I need to respond to right now? Check v-mail, again checking for anything which I need to respond to immediately. Next, it’s breakfast time … this Director of the Future MUST have breakfast, otherwise, I’m an evil wench for the remainder of the day. After breakfast, it’s shower time and then a 2 - 3 hour wait for the rock ‘n roll hair to fully dry. After the shower, I dress in business casual attire. This entrepreneur does NOT hang around the house all day in pajamas and more important, neither should you. Finally, I’m generally at the keyboard by 8:00a, ready to make money and expand the DavisVA Empire.

Look, you don’t have to dress in your Chanel suit and Jimmy Choo’s every morning (unless of course you want to do that!). You should, however, project a business-like demeanor. Doing so sets the tone for the remainder of your day and will make you feel more powerful and more successful.

Nice … Nike DOES it

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

Sitting down to lunch and watching some tube (as I normally do during lunch), and I caught Nike’s new commercial. If you’re an AC/DC fan like I am, you will love this commercial, as you listen to “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution” in the background. We see images of sports figures in track and field, swimming, tennis and baseball. (I ask you, is A-Rod worth $225M? It’s above my paygrade to answer that question!)

Excellent commercial with one major omission: Where’s Lance Armstrong? To the good folks at Nike, why not do a similar commercial with sports figures of the old school?

Web Content Awareness Day Becomes Mass Traffic Generator for Online Biz Owners

Web marketers are flocking in droves to the “Countdown to Web Content Awareness Day Blog” where they can “see their name up in lights” and enjoy a ride on a mass traffic generator in exchange for their promotion of the First Ever Web Marketers’ Holiday.

Dina, Web Copywriting Consultant and owner of WordFeeder.com, has been actively promoting the upcoming Web Content Awareness Day Website since December and is thrilled with the response she’s received. Thanks to a contributing cast of 50+ gurus and experts, the first ever web marketers’ holiday will feature a fully stocked website and a plethora of free information. Content Enthusiasts can look forward to timely advice on how to run a web business more effectively while keeping fresh content constantly feeding in.

As Dina tells it, “Oddly enough, the Web Content Awareness Day project (or WCAD) has truly increased our awareness of search engines and viral marketing. WCAD is momentum building on itself. By constantly monitoring our promotional effort, we’ve been able to isolate exactly which traffic-generating strategies bring the most ‘bang for our traffic buck,’ and the implementation of those strategies brings more traffic.”

Among the quickest ways to build up very high web traffic in a short amount of time - article marketing, blogging, web PR, RSS feeds, networking and link exchanges, all of which will be discussed in-depth both on the Web Content Awareness Day Preview Blog and the main website. WCAD will “open its doors” on February 9, 2006 offering tons of inside tips and free downloads from today’s top web marketers and content creators.

Currently, Dina and the Web Content Awareness Day team are looking for reciprocal relationships - dynamic content providers who want to help promote the big day in exchange for a spot on their “wacky yet informative” blog.

Interested parties can get a sneak preview on the Countdown to Web Content Awareness Day Blog, which is located at WCAD Blog.

Web Content Awareness Day launches on February 9, 2006 at Web Content Awareness Day. E-mail dina@wordfeeder.com for more information.

Say it with me: UNjust

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

One of my least favorite phrases is, “Just my two cents” or “That’s just my opinion.” When I hear the word “just” or see it written, it feels as though the person who’s using that word is lowering their worth … almost as if they feel their opinion is not worth expressing.

I say STATE your opinions, don’t “just” them. What you have to say is valuable, so act the part!

Is it a female thing?

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

I wonder if women are better at delivering Killer Customer Care, compared to men. Is it the maternal instinct which kicks in and takes over? Maybe we’re better at empathising with the person on the other end of the wire? Or is it because we’re better listeners, as a dear friend of mine believes?

I don’t know the answer to this question. What are your thoughts on this topic?

Come and get it: Web Content Awareness Day

Things I like

Thursday, January 19th, 2006

Scenario: Small business owner (yours truly) has been awake since ohhhhh-dark-30 this morning … workin’, meetin’ deadlines and generally having a good time. I’m a little amped right now and need to wind down, so it’s time to share Lori’s “Things I Like” list:

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Two of my favorite things, chocolate and peanut butter, wrapped up in a mouthful of goodness. Hubster Joe knows to refresh the supply when I’m having a bad day. And, uh, a word or two to the good folks at Hershey’s: Please stock those Big Cups at the Stewarts shops in upstate NY! What’s a girl gotta do?

Shrimp and Linguini w/Sundried Tomatoes and Capers
Two words: Hubba Hubba! The trick is to slowly and gently cook the sundried tomatoes and capers in the very best EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) you’ve got in the pantry. And of course, one must have the freshest shrimp one can possibly find.

iTunes
Evil and yet, so awesome. Music at ninety-nice cents a pop … good thing Hubster Joe and I have separate bank accounts. Keep this one to yourself, eh?

HP Printers
Man ‘o man do I love HP printers. You can take these puppies to the end of the earth, and they’d still work as good as the day you printed your first page.

IBM Keyboards
Don’t be jealous because I’ve got one and you don’t. On second thought, yes, you SHOULD be jealous! My Tank (my affectionate name for my IBM keyboard) measures 8X19, and makes that amazing clickety-clack sound. This thing must weigh 5 lbs, maybe slightly more. I zoom through 120 WPM on this baby, and the same simply cannot be said of other keyboards.

Jergen’s Original Scent Cherry-Almond Moisturizer
What’s a girl to do after she breezes through 120 WPM? Well, she softens her hands with Jergen’s, of course! This stuff is the best and the light, crisp scent is just lovely.

These are some of things I like, right now. How about you–what are some of your favorite things?

Davis Virtual Assistants Announces New Strategic Partnership

Thursday, January 19th, 2006

I am very pleased to announce DavisVA’s newest Partner: Judy Edwards, Professional Organizer and Life Coach!

I found Judy via craigslist New York while on a hunt to find an on-site assistant for one of my friends. My friend is highly-educated, extremely accomplished and yes, incredibly disorganized! She’s such a cool lady, and I hated to see her stress about all the piles of stuff in her home office.

Here comes Judy to the rescue (literally and figuratively)! Judy and my friend established a wonderful raport and more important, Judy worked her magic with my friend, by getting her organized with systems my friend will actually use.

Judy and I had a lovely conversation last week, and she took the time to share some stories about her clients in regards to their organizational needs. What I love about Judy is that she takes the time to get to know her clients, to understand how they function, and then she makes recommendations and gets to work. In addition, Judy’s project management experience serves her very well.

Judy, I’m so glad we found you. Keep up the good work!

If you live in New York City, one of the city’s boroughs or in the tri-state area, I highly recommend you contact Judy to discuss your oganizational needs!

$7,000. Who knew!

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

Seven thousand dollars. $7,000. I had NO clue our destroyed Ford Focus was worth seven grand. Apparently it is, for that’s the check we now have from the insurance agency of the driver who hit our car in December. And now … it’s shopping time. Whoo hoo … let’s go shopping for a new car!

I’m going shopping! I’m going shopping!

Can ya feel the love?

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

What a difference a month makes in the lives of our cats, Shakey and Cagny. Shakey, my beautiful, nearly one-year-old non-electric alarm clock, has finally welcomed Cagny into the fold. Cagny, the “old man” of the house at age 10, was utterly terrorized by Shakey in the latter part of 2005. Hubster Joe immediately moved Cagny downstate to The Bronx apartment, gave him some breathing room and time to regroup. Mid-week last week, Joe returns with Cagny, and while the first few minutes between Shakey and Cagny had me worried (she was hissing, he was hiding), Cagny finally realized that hey, “I’m 2 1/2 times your size, Shakey, and I’m not going to allow your dominating ways.” Okay, okay … I know that cats can’t talk, but if Cagny could, I’m sure that’s what he would say!

The past few days with both cats in the house have proven to be a fascinating study, as I watch them interact and work out their cat hierarchy. Fascinating stuff. Shakey’s still the “princess” and yet, she realizes there’s another creature in the house who does what she does and acts the way she acts.

Thanks to everyone who passed along advice in regards to this matter. Much obliged!

My faith in business is restored

Thursday, January 12th, 2006

Yesterday I somewhat facetiously awarded DavisVA’s weekly Customer Care Award to, well, Davis Virtual Assistants! Today, I want to give out this award to a lady who truly deserves the honor: Porsha at goEmerchant.com. In a word, or two, Porsha’s got game, she knows her company’s products very well and the best part is she’s a hoot! Funny, quick-witted and she answers my questions or fixes my problems in a heartbeat. Porsha has gone so far as to give me her home telephone number, which I’m happy to report I’ve used only once.

Porsha defines KILLER Customer Care every time I chat with her, and she truly deserves this honor.

Keep up the fantastic work, Porsha!
